A Short shows its sound at the bottom left when it comes from YouTube’s library. Edited elsewhere or clipped from a long video, it often just says “Original sound”. Paste the link of the Short: it’s listened to from start to finish.

In short

  • Tap Share on the right of the Short, then Copy link (youtube.com/shorts/…), and paste it above. A Short lasts 3 minutes at most, so it is listened to in full.
  • “Original sound” means the music arrived with the video (a CapCut edit, a clip from a long video): YouTube doesn’t name it, but listening can find it.
  • If the Short was cut from a longer video on the same channel, paste the full video’s link too: you get its whole tracklist, with timestamps.

What song is this Short using?

The sound line, and when it goes quiet

At the bottom left of a Short, a line with a music note names the sound. A track chosen in YouTube’s sound library while creating the Short is named there; tapping it lists the other Shorts built on that sound.

Many Shorts are edited elsewhere, in CapCut or on a computer, music included. YouTube then receives a video with the audio built in and only shows “Original sound” with the channel name. The music is there, without a title. Some Shorts show nothing at all.

  • Song picked in YouTube’s sound libraryTitle and artist at the bottom left, tappable.

Clipped Shorts

Going back to the long video the Short came from

Lots of channels post Shorts cut from their long videos: a funny moment from a vlog, the highlight of a stream. YouTube then shows a link to the source video under the Short’s title. The Short’s sound is the full video’s sound, background music included.

You have two options. Paste the Short’s link: it’s short, so it is listened to without gaps, and even a song lasting a few seconds stands a chance. Or paste the full video’s link: you get all of its songs with timestamps, and you can find the Short’s scene in the list.

An honest miss

A Short where nothing was recognized, and why

During our tests on October 12, a 31-second Short filmed during a football match was analyzed: edited audio, a voiceover on top and the roar of the stadium. Result: no song recognized. That isn’t a hidden failure; it is the answer the page displayed.

Three things stacked up: edited audio, whose fingerprint no longer matches the original; a voice in the foreground; and crowd noise covering the bass and the highs. Each alone usually leaves a chance; all three together rarely do. An honest “nothing found” beats a random title.

  • Edited audioCuts and effects: the fingerprint no longer matches the release.
  • VoiceoverThe voice covers the music from start to finish.
  • Crowd noiseA stadium roar hides the frequencies the engine relies on.
  • What would have helpedA moment where the music plays alone, or the source video without commentary.

Edited sounds

Sped up, looped, cut: what recognition can handle

Shorts borrow TikTok’s habits: sped-up versions, a chorus on loop, cuts on every beat. A light speed-up is often recognized with a lower score; a two-second loop repeated over and over gives little to work with. The percentage on each result tells you how far to trust it.

When a Short chains two songs, both are listed. Under 50% confidence a title is flagged “double-check”: listen to it before reusing it in a Short of your own.

Shorts, TikTok, Reels

Same idea, three apps, three labels

Vertical videos travel between apps: the same clip is often posted as a TikTok, a Reel and a Short. Each app labels unnamed audio differently, but the fix is the same everywhere: copy the video link and let the audio be listened to.

If a Short gives nothing, look for the same clip on TikTok or Instagram. A repost with less talking over the music, or one that kept the library song attached, can give a cleaner answer.

The song in a Short, in three taps

  1. Share, then Copy link

The Share button is on the right of the Short; the link starts with youtube.com/shorts/.

  2. Paste it here

A Short lasts 3 minutes at most: it is listened to in full, in a few seconds.

  3. Read the confidence

Above 70% it’s solid; under 50%, “double-check”. Listen before reusing the sound.

Updated on

Why does my Short say “Original sound”?

Because the music arrived with the video, edited elsewhere or clipped from a long video, instead of being picked in YouTube’s sound library. YouTube then can’t link it to a title.

How do I find the song in a YouTube Short by URL?

Copy the youtube.com/shorts/… link (Share button, or the browser address) and paste it above. Shorts are short enough to be heard end to end, and each match is listed.

Is a Short handled differently from a regular video?

Only in one way: since a Short lasts 3 minutes at most, it is listened to without gaps, never in samples.

Should I paste the Short or the full video?

The Short for its song alone; the full video, linked under the Short’s title, for the whole tracklist with timestamps.

Does it work with sped-up Shorts?

Often, with a lower confidence. Under 50% the song is flagged “double-check”.

Why was nothing found in my Short?

A voice in front, crowd noise, heavily edited audio, or music that was never released. In our tests, a football Short combining all three gave nothing, and that’s what the page showed.

Can I reuse the song in my own Short?

A name doesn’t come with permission. When you make your Short, add the song from YouTube’s own sound library: that route is licensed.

Does it work from a computer?

Yes: the youtube.com/shorts/… address in the browser bar works just like the link copied from the app.

Do I need a YouTube account?

No, the link is enough. The Short just has to be public or unlisted.
